Mission Possible: Create your Future STEAM Self

Classrooms are one of the best places to encourage students to become whatever they want to be, regardless of their chosen field. That is why, on April 20, Fundación Cibervoluntarios, one of the partners of the EITIC.EU project, held several workshops to foster STEAM vocations among girls and young people in different educational centres in Madrid (Spain), as part of the project’s pilot activities.

During these sessions, children of different ages explored STEAM fields through galactic missions. They were introduced to inspiring examples of pioneering women in these areas and discovered their potential STEAM future by strengthening their confidence, while also helping to break gender stereotypes in these fields.

How the activity was carried out:

They used profiles such as Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, and Dr. Fei-Fei Li, an AI specialist, among others, as “galactic guides.” These figures inspired them to imagine their future selves and helped them immerse in the world of the scientific method and experimentation. Combined with various gamified activities, this made the experience both enriching and motivating for the students.

The children highlighted the importance of STEAM fields, how enjoyable it is to experiment and explore their different possibilities, and their interest in some of these professions:

“Today I learned that I am good at science and technology” and “I learned that STEAM is quite interesting, and I discovered some careers I didn’t know I liked.”

Thanks to initiatives like these and the work of the EITIC.EU project partners, we reaffirm the need to continue advancing education towards STEAM careers and to raise awareness that the future of women in science is an increasingly visible and necessary reality.
